Degree programs that train veterinary technicians and technologists should be accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association. The most common programs lead to an associate degree, but there are several accredited veterinary technology Bachelor of Science (B.S.) programs available.

School Overviews

Three good schools that offer veterinary technology programs are Purdue University, Michigan State University (MSU) and North Dakota State University. Each of these programs earned high national rankings from U.S. News & World Report for 2020.

Purdue University in West Lafayette, IN

School Highlight: Purdue's veterinary school tied for 13th in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2020.

Purdue University is a state-funded university with a flagship campus in West Lafayette, IN. The school tied for 57th best college in the nation by U.S. News & World Report in 2020. The veterinary technology program offered by the School of Veterinary Medicine leads to an associate degree in three years or a B.S. degree if a fourth year is completed. The associate degree option is also available in an online format, which is designed for employed veterinary technicians who want to continue their employment while pursuing the degree. This online program requires 17 credit hours of clinical field experience in a licensed veterinary practice.

Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI

School Highlight: Over a 3-year span, MSU vet tech program graduates have had a 98% pass rate for the board exams.

MSU is a Big Ten school that was tied at 84th by U.S. News & World Report in 2020 among the nation's top colleges. Michigan State's College of Veterinary Medicine offers a 4-year bachelor's program in veterinary technology. The program's fourth year is devoted to clinical internships and approved electives in subjects such as zoology, agribusiness and animal science. Also available from the college is an accredited Certificate of Completion program in veterinary medicine. The 5-semester program is a shorter option for those who already hold another degree but want pursue licensure as a veterinary technician.

North Dakota State University in Fargo, ND

School Highlight: NDSU has a Veterinary Technician Club on campus, and students enrolled in the vet tech track gain hands-on experience with in-house animals and pet adoption agencies.

The Department of Animal Sciences at North Dakota State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Veterinary Technology that prepares students for careers as licensed veterinary technicians. In the first year, students complete a pre-professional curriculum that includes courses in anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and domestic animals. From there, they must apply to the professional program, which begins in the second year and introduces students to clinical procedures and technologies. Students must participate in clinical practicums, and the degree culminates in a clinical externship. For U.S. News & World Report's 2020 rankings, NDSU was tied at #281 among national universities and #140 among public schools.

  • Kent State University's accredited veterinary technician program is available on both the Trumbull and Tuscarawas campuses, which are located in Warren, OH, and New Philadelphia, OH.
  • Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, TN, offers both associate and bachelor's degrees for veterinary medical technology, and students participate in internships with veterinary offices, a local university and emergency clinics.
  • Miami Dade College in Miami, FL, offers a six-semester, 73-credit vet tech program calls for 400 clinical hours and leads to an Associate in Science degree.
  • Vet tech students in the Hutson School of Agriculture at Murray State University in Murray, KY, have access to the program's x-ray room, labs, a pharmacy, a surgery suite and kennels.
  • Oklahoma State University in Oklahoma City provides an Associate in Applied Science degree program for this field. Students can also participate in the school's Veterinary Technician Students Association.
  • At SUNY College of Technology at Canton in Canton, NY, the Veterinary Science Technology lab classes typically have roughly 20 students, and participants in this 4-semester track complete a senior preceptorship.
